France photos

Pictures taken in France.

These photos were taken in various parts of France. My sister was living there so I took the advantage of a quick holiday to visit her and to take photos of the area. She was living roughly in between Limoges and Angoulême.

Angoulême was a town I particularly liked. It is the French capital of the comic book. There are murals everywhere. Mostly comic book style. Angoulême is also the home to the comic book museum and has a history dating back to the Romans and Visigoths. Perched on top of a hill in a more or less flat countryside, it is easy to see why this town became the capital of the area with its natural defensive position.

The remaining photos are of the Languedoc area of France where the language Occitan is spoken instead of French. This language is a Romance Language closely related to Catalan in Spain and Rheto Romanche of Switzerland.

The “odd man out” on this page is Mont Saint Michél at the bottom of the page which is a medieval town on the north coast of France situated on a hillock that is cut off from the mainland by incoming tides and has a lot of associations with the Arthurian legends. Interestingly there is a town in the UK called St. Michael’s Mount which lies almost directly opposite its French counterpart and looks very similar being perched on top of a hillock in the English Channel.
