SuperSnail photos on FLICKR instead of Photobucket

PhotoBucket Extorion

Photobucket used to be a site that people like me could use to upload their photos for others to see and to hotlink to their blogs. That means, for those that don’t know the terminology, that the photos are stored on Photobucket but they appear here as well as there.

What I used to do was to make a slide show with the links that Photobucket supplied and I’d post them on this page. I aways included something like “if you want to see these photos bigger and in more detail, go to Photobucket” and I’d made their name the a link to take you straight to the page of photos you’d selected to see.

Easy – hey?

Photobucket bombshell

Have a guess how much? $30 dollars a year? That probably would have been fair. But no…

Photobucket want $399 annually
.
Yes you read that correctly $399 per year. We aren’t frigging Amazon or eBay we are small time bloggers. Professional bloggers and sites pay for “reliable” photo storage and servers.

Death of Photobucket?

The result of this is that people like me, little people with little blogs, have had all our links destroyed in one fell swoop. One fellow I read about has had 12 years of travel blogs destroyed by this insane decision. In actual fact this extortion has destroyed countless blogs and forums. People are leaving Photobucket in droves. And I expect that the jerk at the top who decided to implement the decision will be leaving too, and good bloody riddance. My opinion and a lot of others too, is that Photobucket will die within the year.

FLICKR for reliable hosting and 3rd party links.
So to that end I have moved all my photos to FLICKR (owned by YaHoo) and you can see them here if you have a desire or are bored out of your mind with the telly. Alternatively you can browse the albums directly from my menu bar above.

A casual search of the internet with just the company’s name brings up a ton of news and complaints. Here are a few for those that are interested and were thinking of using these people for their photo storage.
