Santisteban del Puerto

This area of Spain, in the province of Jaén, has a rich history from the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, to Christians. It is incredibly beautiful with it’s hills patch-worked with olive trees as far as the eye can see. This town was known as Ilucia by the Iberic, then Itangi by the Phoenician, Ilugo by the Romans, San Esteban by the Visigoths, Sant Astabin by the Arabs and Santisteban del Puerto since mediaeval times. Nestled in a cup in between three red hills, it is a maze of tiny streets and plazas. It really isn’t a town in which to own a car.

It is part of the Villacarrillo municipality located in the southwestern part of the region of Las Villas, in the province of Jaén. The borders of the Villacarrillo municipality are:

  • Santisteban del Puerto
  • Iznatoraf
  • Villanueva del Arzobispo
  • Santiago-Pontones
  • Santo Tomé
  • Úbeda (over the enclave known as Rincón de Ubeda)
  • Sabiote
