Some people maintain that as you get older you don’t need as much sleep. They may be right, I don’t know. All I know is I never get enough sleep – insomnia rules. If I’m lucky I manage four hours a night, often only three hours. This photomontage was made after about 10 days of 3 to 3 ½ hours sleep. I do try and adopt the Spanish habit that I got used to when living there of having a siesta, which does help with the insomnia. But that doesn’t always work out because here in India they aren’t used to it, so there is often noise. At the moment we have monkeys stealing coconuts, so fire crackers are used to scare them off.
My main insomnia problem that I can see is that I need an OFF switch on my brain at night. I lie in bed with thoughts racing. Not so much problems, but they obviously occur, but just random “things”. It’s like my brain wont shut down for at least half an hour and then 3 – 4 hours later bing, I’m awake. Once I’m awake it’s rare for me to doze off again. The slightest noise will wake me including a mosquito buzzing or the cell phone from next door binging as a message comes in.
I will admit that after a month or so of poor sleep I will quite often get 3 days to a week of maybe 6 hours a night and then it’s back to the same old routine of insomnia. It’s not so bad when I’m by myself at my place. I’ll get up and play the ukulele or watch a movie or TV serial or read. But when you are traveling and are staying with friends or in hostels it’s a bloody nuisance. The only advantage is that I can guarantee to be on one of the first transports out of town.
This photomontage was a result of that. You can see more of this type of my work here.
